I know there ableton but I need something more than a computer to produce music

I would suggest Ardour or Audacity, but it really depends on what exactly we are trying to do. See http://www.t3technet.com/audio.php You can do anything on a computer, but if you want to use acoustic instruments and voices that are needed at least a decent sound card and microphone. Some cards sound not very good for use in audio production.
